Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontics, has a bad reputation but there really is nothing to worry about – in fact the isolation technique we use lets you go to sleep! The treatment involves no more discomfort than many other dental procedures, and it you will save the tooth, which is the best thing you can do for your oral health.

Why would I need a root canal?

Well, sometimes because of decay or trauma, the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected. The infection can spread through the root canals of the tooth and even form a painful abscess. In most cases, if root canal therapy is not carried out, the tooth will have to be extracted.

How does root canal therapy work?

  • It starts with local anaesthetic, which ensures there will be no discomfort during treatment
  • We drill a hole that gives us access to the root canal system
  • The dental pulp is removed with a special file and the canal system is disinfected
  • The canals are filled and the tooth is capped with a temporary crown
  • At a later visit we check to ensure the infection has cleared, then finish the treatment with permanent materials

Taylored for you

Taylored Dental Care has invested heavily in training and technology to make your root canal experience more comfortable and to ensure the best long-term outcomes:

Pain-free –

We have a wide range of anaesthetic options to ensure your root canal experience is as comfortable as possible, so there’s no need to be nervous.

Isolation –

This is the term we use to describe creating a working area that is ideal for the patient and the dentist. We use a special block that controls the tongue and keeps your mouth open, and also a rubber dam, which is a sheet of rubber stretched across the inside of your mouth.

Together these materials keep the area dry and allow you to relax, which means a much more comfortable experience for you. You can watch a video while we work or, as many of our root canal patients do, fall asleep!

Magnification –

Everything we do is in miniature, so we use high-quality surgical “loupes”, which are like magnified spectacles. These allow us to see the internal tooth anatomy easily and clearly. Some dentists still trust the naked eye when doing root canals but we believe magnification is essential to do the best job.

Training –

We attend as many root canal therapy postgraduate courses as we can get to, and always share our knowledge and expertise with our colleagues. Root canal therapy is technically challenging and physically demanding, so we ensure that all of our dentists have postgraduate qualifications in it.
