Crowns

Fitting a dental crown can make a world of difference both to the appearance, functionality and future health of a tooth which might be too damaged or eroded to reconstruct using fillings.

7 reasons why we might recommend crowning a tooth:

  1. Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
  2. Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  3. Restore a fractured tooth
  4. Attach a bridge
  5. Cover a dental implant
  6. Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  7. Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. This is why it is important for us to help you maintain your oral health so that there is no need to have a crown.

Sometimes known as a ‘caps’, crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. They can be made of porcelain or gold or a combination of these materials.

Other reasons why you may need a crown

  • you may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth
  • you may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
  • it may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.

Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

Fillings

Fillings are used to fill holes (cavities) that have formed, usually as a result of decay or tooth wear. There are many types of filling, each suitable for different cavities. The best way to prevent fillings is to have a great oral hygiene routine each day and to come to visit a hygienist who will help monitor and assess your hygiene.

First, the dentist will administer a local anaesthetic – we always take great care to make sure you’re comfortable throughout all procedures. Then the decayed and weakened parts of the tooth are removed before the cavity is thoroughly cleaned.

The final stage is to replace the removed material with a filling. We’ll consult with you to help you decide which type of material is best for the filling. This depends on several factors:

  1. The size of the cavity
  2. The position of the cavity
  3. The requirement for the filling to be invvisible

Amalgam fillings

Amalgam fillings are made of a combination of metals iand are silver/grey in appearance. Amalgam is extremely durable and able to withstand the grinding and chewing of your back teeth over long periods of time.

Tooth-coloured fillings

You can choose tooth-coloured fillings to match the colour of your teeth, making them a natural-looking alternative to amalgam fillings. They are often used in teeth that show when you smile or talk. They aren’t as durable as amalgam and so aren’t always suitable for the grinding and chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
